The small business press has been touting crowdfunding as the high tech way to get new ideas off the ground. The thought of raising capital and seed funding from the public sounds good, but does it really work?

If the success of the crowdfunding campaign to Save Sawtell Cinema is anything to go by, then the answer is yes.

The drive to raise funds for new seating in the soon-to-be-reopened Sawtell Cinema has already raised over $90,000, largely from the mums, dads and small businesses owners of the Coffs Coast.

“So what?” I hear you say. “What’s in it for me and my business?”

Well, first off the campaign’s success suggests this may be an interesting model for your own new products or projects. So watch carefully.

And secondly take a look at the rewards on offer. There are a few that could offer you some unique business advantages.

Buying naming rights for a cinema seat could be a unique advertising opportunity. At $500 for the life of the seat, that’s pretty good reach and frequency for your dollar.

Famed movie critic David Stratton is the patron of the campaign and will be coming to town in February. Tickets to a special screening with David Stratton would be a distinctive way to reward your staff.

Even more special is the screening plus a private dinner with David Stratton. What a unique way to entertain your most valuable customers. There are only 10 seats available at the private dinner so you could buy the lot and have a private client function with a dash of fame.

And if you’re sick of the same old Christmas or client party then take a look at the private party for 40 people in the boutique cinema. The price looks a bit rich at $5000, but when you realise that’s $125 per head with food, drink and your choice of film it’s actually pretty reasonable.
