Can I claim for medical expenses not covered by Medicare?

The net medical expenses tax offset is being phased out.

Up until the change you could claim an offset for your total out of pocket medical expenses – total expenses less any refunds from Medicare or your private health insurer.

If you made a claim last year then there is no change to the types of medical expenses you can claim.

If you did not make a claim last year then you will only be able to claim net expenses relating to disability aids, attendant care or aged care.

In either case an income test still applies, so check out the ATO’s net medical expenses offset calculator.
